Rutherglen Estates first vintage of Sangiovese was in 2001. According to their website, this wine was aged in oak hogsheads, 10% of which were new Hungarian, and this particular type of oak was chosen to accentuate the bright cherry notes as well as the naturally spicy and savoury characters. Seems to work for me.
